How do we know Christ's priesthood is superior to the Levitical priesthood?

The superiority of Christ's priesthood over the Levitical priesthood is affirmed in Hebrews 7:11-12, which raises the question of why another priest after the order of Melchizedek was needed if the Levitical priesthood was perfect. The inadequacy of the Levitical priests is noted, as they were numerous due to death, and their sacrifices were merely types that could not effectually remove sin.
