How do we know Christ's sacrifice was necessary?

Answered in 6 sources

Christ's sacrifice was necessary to bear the wrath of God against the sins of His elect, as foretold in scripture.

The necessity of Christ's sacrifice is deeply rooted in the doctrine of sin and God's holiness. As the eternal Son of God, Jesus took upon Himself the sins of His people, fully absorbing the punishment and wrath that was rightfully theirs. Lamentations 1 captures this sorrow of sin, where Christ speaks of Himself as 'the man that hath seen affliction.' His agony in Gethsemane illustrates the magnitude of the burden He was about to bear. The Scriptures testify that He was the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world (Revelation 13:8), marking the necessity of His crucifixion as the only means for salvation to those chosen in Him. Without His sacrificial death, there would be no atonement for sin, and therefore, no hope for reconciliation with God.
