How do we know death is not a penalty for believers?

Answered in 1 source

Death for believers is not a penalty for sin, but a means of going home to be with God.

The distinction between death as a penalty and death as a privilege for believers lies in Christ's redemptive work. Christ bore the penalty for the believer's sins, which means that death cannot be a punishment for those who are in Him. Instead, as Paul emphasizes in 1 Corinthians 15, death is a necessary step toward resurrection and glorification. For a believer, 'to die is gain' because it signifies the end of earthly struggles and the beginning of eternal fellowship with God, aligning with the understanding that death is precious in His sight.
