How do we know election and free will are compatible?

Answered in 1 source

Election and free will are compatible because human unwillingness does not negate God’s sovereignty in salvation.

The concept of election does not contradict human will; rather, it acknowledges the fallen human condition whereby individuals are naturally disinclined to seek God. In Luke 13:34, Christ expresses His desire to gather Jerusalem's children, stating, 'How often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and you would not.' This highlights that while God is sovereign over election, human refusal to come to Christ originates from a will enslaved to sin. Thus, God's grace compels the unwilling heart to respond positively to His call.
