How do we know God approved of kings in Israel?

Answered in 1 source

God allowed the people of Israel to have a king, indicating His approval, despite it being a result of their rebellion.

Though the Israelites requested a king out of a desire to be like other nations, God ultimately granted their request, indicating His allowance of kingship. God instructed Samuel to 'hearken unto their voice' (1 Samuel 8:7). This indicates that God, while acknowledging their rebellion, permitted the institution of monarchy among them. However, this was not for their ultimate good, as it led to oppression and a restriction of their freedoms. Thus, while God approved of the institution of a king, it came with solemn warnings about the consequences of such leadership, as seen in verses 10-18.
