How do we know God contends with sinners?

Answered in 1 source

God contends with sinners by convicting their consciences and making them aware of their sinful state (Isaiah 57:16-17).

In Isaiah 57:16-17, God declares that He will not contend with sinners forever but does so for a purpose: to reveal their iniquity and lead them to repentance. This contention often manifests through a struggle in the conscience, where individuals are made aware of their sinfulness and spiritual state. As the preacher notes, God's contention can include trials and afflictions designed to strip away false comfort and self-righteousness. This indicates that God's love and displeasure with our sin is directed towards humbling us so that we might seek Him genuinely. Thus, God's contention is an act of grace aimed at turning us from our sinful ways toward the grace and righteousness found in Christ.
