How do we know God forgives sins?

In Matthew 9, Jesus acknowledges the faith of those who brought the man sick of the palsy to Him and declares, 'Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee.' This illustrates that forgiveness is granted by God's authority. Furthermore, Jesus proves His power to forgive by healing the man, showing that He not only states forgiveness but also has the ability to transform lives.
