How do we know God forgives some sins and not others?

Answered in 1 source

God forgives sins based on His sovereign choice and grace, not by human effort or decisions.

The sovereignty of God in forgiveness is pivotal in understanding why some sins are forgiven while others are retained. The message of the Gospel reveals that salvation and forgiveness are gifts from God, who has mercy on whom He will have mercy (Romans 9:15). This illustrates that not all are forgiven, as depicted in the sobering reality of hell awaiting those whose sins are retained. Ephesians 1:4-7 clearly states that those chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world are the ones who receive redemption and forgiveness through His blood. Therefore, God’s decision to forgive is rooted in His divine will, not contingent on human acceptance.
