How do we know God has the right to show mercy?

Answered in 1 source

God exercising mercy is grounded in His sovereign will and nature, as He has the authority to show mercy to whom He chooses.

The doctrine of God's sovereignty affirms that He has absolute authority over His creation, including the ability to dispense mercy. As stated in Romans 9:15, "For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion." This sovereignty means that God's decisions regarding mercy and judgment are not subject to human reasoning or sentiment but derive from His perfect justice and love. Understanding God's right to show mercy reinforces the beauty of grace; we receive mercy not because we deserve it but because it is a divine gift bestowed according to His will.
