How do we know God hates lying?

Answered in 1 source

Scripture consistently portrays lying as an abomination to God, indicating His righteous hatred towards it.

Throughout the entirety of Scripture, God expresses a clear and consistent disdain for lying. In Proverbs 6:16-19, where it lists the seven things the Lord hates, lying is explicitly mentioned as one of them. This indicates that God’s moral assessment of lies is not trivial; it is fundamentally serious. The Old Testament Law similarly affirms this stance with commands against falsehoods in interpersonal dealings (Leviticus 19:11) and bearing false witness (Exodus 20:16). In the New Testament, Christ and the apostles reiterate these convictions, emphasizing in Colossians 3:9 that believers must not lie because they have been renewed in Christ. Further, God's judgment against liars is reinforced in Revelation 21:8, which warns that all liars will face eternal consequence, solidifying the gravity with which God regards dishonesty.
