How do we know God is holy?

Answered in 13 sources

Our understanding of God's holiness is confirmed through Scripture, which presents Him as the 'Holy One' and emphasizes His absolute purity and moral perfection (1 Samuel 2:2).

The holiness of God can be understood through His self-revelation in Scripture and His interactions with creation. Throughout the Old and New Testaments, God is referred to as 'the Holy One,' a title that emphasizes His distinct nature as utterly separate from sin and imperfection. In 1 Samuel 2:2, we read, 'There is none holy as the Lord; there is none besides You; there is no rock like our God.' This reflects God's unique status as the fountain of all holiness. Additionally, the passionate devotion of the seraphims in Isaiah 6:3, who proclaim God's holiness day and night, supports this truth. His holiness is considered foundational to His character; it is the basis upon which His justice is framed and His mercy is extended. If God were not holy, He could not be a righteous judge or a trustworthy promise keeper.
