How do we know God is in control of evil?

Answered in 1 source

Scripture reveals that God is sovereign over all, including the actions of evil men, without being the author of their sin (Acts 2:23).

Understanding God's control over evil is a complex yet crucial aspect of Reformed theology. Acts 2:23 illustrates this principle, indicating that even the wicked acts against Christ were predetermined by God's foreknowledge, yet those responsible for executing these acts bear the moral guilt of their choices. This dichotomy between God's sovereignty and human sinfulness is essential to recognize: God ordains all that comes to pass but does not cause evil to occur nor does He tempt anyone to sin (James 1:13).

The Westminster Confession of Faith elaborates on this by stating that God's providence extends to all sins, ensuring that while the sinful actions proceed from the creature, they are nonetheless governed and ordered in a manner that serves His holy ends. Thus, God is not complicit in evil; rather, He sovereignly uses it to fulfill His ultimate purposes, just as He did in the life of David, wherein even the curses of Shimei served to draw David closer to God and teach profound lessons about humility and reliance on divine grace.
