How do we know God is just in justifying the ungodly?

Answered in 2 sources

God's justice in justifying the ungodly is rooted in the imputed righteousness of Christ, who fulfilled the law on behalf of sinners.

God is just to justify the ungodly because the basis of justification lies in the imputed righteousness of Christ. This means that all the righteousness necessary for salvation and acceptance before God has been achieved by Christ alone, and it is through faith in His work that sinners are justified. The clarity of this doctrine comes from passages such as Romans 4:5, which states that God justifies the ungodly based on faith. Until we understand that this righteousness is wholly outside ourselves, we cannot grasp how God can indeed be a just God while mercifully justifying sinners.
