How do we know God is merciful and just?

Answered in 2 sources

God demonstrates both mercy and justice through Christ, satisfying divine justice while offering mercy to sinners.

The duality of God's mercy and justice is profoundly illustrated in the cross of Christ. According to Habakkuk 3, when God expresses wrath, He simultaneously remembers mercy. This reflects the truth that God's justice demands punishment for sin; yet, through Christ’s atoning sacrifice, justice is satisfied and mercy is granted to the ungodly. God cannot act unjustly; therefore, His plan encompasses both attributes. In the act of Christ bearing the full weight of sin’s penalty, we see God's righteousness upheld while His grace is extended to those who believe, demonstrating that true mercy flows from the fulfillment of divine justice.
