How do we know God is near in our suffering?

Answered in 2 sources

God promises to be near to the brokenhearted, and His presence is a source of comfort in suffering.

Scripture consistently affirms God’s proximity to those who are in distress. Psalm 34:18 states, 'The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.' This assures believers that in their trials, they are not abandoned; rather, they can lean into God, who is a refuge in times of trouble. Believers often experience a profound sense of God's presence especially when earthly comforts fail.

When Job cried out for God in his anguish, he exemplified the instinct of a true believer seeking reassurance from their Creator. The longing for communion with God becomes particularly acute amidst suffering, driving people toward deeper dependence on Him. It is through these experiences that believers can find solace, learning that God’s faithful word sustains them even when earthly sources prove inadequate, thereby strengthening their faith and trust in His sovereign purpose.
