How do we know God is truly light?

Answered in 1 source

We know God is light because the Scriptures consistently declare this attribute, highlighting His holiness and purity (1 John 1:5).

The testimony of Scripture provides robust evidence for the truth that God is light. Throughout the Bible, light is used as a metaphor for God's holiness and moral perfection. For instance, in Isaiah 6, the seraphim proclaim God's holiness, exclaiming, 'Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts.' This declaration mirrors the truth that God is light; it reveals His uncompromising nature against sin. Additionally, the apostle John asserts that the understanding of God as light is foundational for grasping the nature of our relationship with Him and the necessity of Jesus Christ as the manifestation of that light in the world. Our faith rests on the character of God as revealed in Scripture.
