How do we know God's attributes are essential to His being?

Answered in 1 source

God's attributes are inherently connected to His essence, meaning they define what God is.

In theology, it is understood that God's attributes are not separate from His essence but are integral to it. As noted in the sermon, Herman Bavinck remarked that 'every one of God's attributes is identical with His being.' This means that we cannot understand God apart from His attributes such as holiness, wisdom, and love. Moreover, the attributes do not conflict with each other; they reflect the character of God in totality. To approach God, we must acknowledge these qualities as fundamental to His nature, which shapes our relationship with Him and enriches our understanding of His greatness and sovereignty.
