How do we know God's forgiveness is real?

Answered in 17 sources

God's forgiveness is grounded in His character, promises, and the sacrifice of Christ, offering complete and immediate mercy to all who believe.

The psalmist asserts that there is forgiveness with God, rooted deeply in God's merciful character and His promises. Throughout scripture, we see God's readiness to forgive those who genuinely seek Him. God's own declarations, such as in Isaiah 1:18, show that He is willing to wash away even the gravest of sins. Furthermore, the gospel centers on Christ’s atonement, which provides the basis for our forgiveness. Therefore, when believers come to Christ in faith, trusting in His finished work, they receive forgiveness not only for past sins but for all unrighteousness, as promised in 1 John 1:9.
