How do we know God's grace is present in discipline?

Answered in 1 source

God’s discipline is a form of grace, showing His commitment to bring His children back to repentance.

In the case of David, God’s displeasure with his prideful numbering of Israel led to a severe but necessary discipline. Even after David's confession and recognition of his folly, God allowed a plague to fall upon the nation. This indicates that while God removes the eternal consequences of sin, He does not always remove temporal punishment. God's discipline serves as a reminder of His holiness and the seriousness of sin, and it is in this that His grace is most evident. The loving discipline of the Lord is a sign of His love and care for His people, as He desires for them to walk in righteousness and bear the fruit of repentance.
