How do we know God's promises are true for us?

Answered in 1 source

We know God's promises are true for us if we fit the description of His people as defined in Scripture.

Understanding whether God's promises apply to us involves discerning whether we belong to the group to which His promises are made—His people. In Matthew 1:21, it states that Jesus shall save His people from their sins. Thus, the assurance of salvation comes from belonging to this group. The concept is similar to a will; one cannot claim inheritance unless one's name is mentioned. The Scripture further identifies these 'sheep' in John 10:27: 'My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.' If we demonstrate belief in Christ's words and a following heart, we can have confidence in His assurances. Additionally, believing in Jesus and responding to Him in love confirms our identity as His people.
