How do we know God uses afflictions for our good?

Answered in 3 sources

Scripture teaches that God disciplines His children to share in His holiness and make them spiritually mature.

God’s use of afflictions can be understood through the lens of His fatherly discipline, which is a common theme throughout Scripture. The Book of Hebrews affirms that God disciplines those He loves (Hebrews 12:6), and this serves as a clear indication that trials can lead to spiritual growth. Afflictions are not inherently punitive but can be transformative in nature as they teach us reliance on God and draw us closer to His character.

The apostle Paul reminds us in Romans 8:28 that 'we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him.' This underscores the reality that our tribulations, while challenging, are ultimately orchestrated by a loving God who has our best interests at heart. Each difficulty we face is intended to help us become partakers of His holiness, teaching us about perseverance, faith, and the depth of God's love for us. Recognizing this divine purpose in our suffering enables us to rejoice in our trials, knowing they contribute to our sanctification.
