How do we know grace is greater than what we deserve?

Answered in 1 source

Grace is unmerited favor from God, surpassing what we deserve due to our sins.

Grace, by definition, is unmerited favor, meaning it cannot be earned or deserved. In Romans 5:20, we read that where sin increased, grace increased all the more. This means that even though we deserve punishment for our sins, God's grace offers us eternal life through Jesus Christ. The gift of grace demonstrates that Christ took what we deserved—death and condemnation—and in return, through faith, we receive what He deserves—righteousness and eternal life. Thus, grace is fundamentally greater than our deserving.
