How do we know growth in grace is true?

Answered in 4 sources

Growth in grace is evidenced by increased love for Jesus and a greater desire to know Him, validating the transformative power of the Holy Spirit.

We recognize the truth of growth in grace through the internal and external manifestations of our faith. As we grow in our relationship with Christ, there should be a notable increase in our love for Him and others, as well as a deeper hunger to know Him more fully (2 Peter 3:18). The transformation in a believer’s life is one of the most significant endorsements of the authenticity of spiritual growth.

Furthermore, the Holy Spirit actively works within believers, prompting a desire for an intimate fellowship with Jesus. Those who genuinely experience a desire for deeper knowledge and love for Christ can be assured that they are growing in grace. As Spurgeon points out, if one does not yearn for deeper acquaintance with Christ, it may indicate a lack of true love for Him, as love always seeks closeness. Therefore, both the yearning for growth and the fruits of that growth serve as evidence of its truth.
