How do we know if a preacher is speaking the truth?

Answered in 1 source

1 John 4:1 advises believers to test the spirits to determine if they are from God.

The Bible guides us in discerning whether a preacher is speaking the truth. In 1 John 4:1, we are commanded to test the spirits to determine their origin—whether they are from God or from the spirit of error. The reasoning behind this is that many false prophets have gone out into the world, often masquerading as messengers of truth. By examining what a preacher confesses about Christ, especially whether they affirm that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh, one can discern if they are speaking from the Spirit of Truth (1 John 4:2) or from the spirit of Antichrist. Therefore, true belief in Christ and faithful doctrinal affirmation are key indicators of a preacher speaking authentically of God.
