How do we know if a prophet is true or false?

Answered in 6 sources

A true prophet's predictions will come to pass as they speak God's words, whereas false prophets will lead to confusion and false doctrine (Deuteronomy 18:21-22).

The primary way to discern a true prophet from a false prophet is the accuracy of their predictions and the fidelity of their teachings to God's Word. According to Deuteronomy 18:21-22, if a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord and their words do not come to pass, they are proven to be false. Additionally, true prophets proclaim the necessity of repentance and faith in the one true way of salvation, Jesus Christ, while false prophets often preach diluted or corrupt messages that accommodate societal desires. Thus, examining their doctrine and lifestyle, as well as their alignment with scripture, provides clarity in discernment.
