How do we know if our relationship with God is real?

Answered in 1 source

A real relationship with God is evidenced by inward change, love for Christ, and transformation in how one views and reacts to sin.

To assess whether our relationship with God is genuine, several tests may be applied. Primarily, one should consider the relationship's position in their inner person—does it occupy the throne of their life and dictate their will and choices? It should also evoke an intense hatred for sin, recognizing its nature as contrary to God’s character. Additionally, one’s feelings toward Christ are pivotal; a true relationship is marked by a deep love and reliance upon Jesus as not just a figure of history, but as one's personal Redeemer. Lastly, the fruit of that relationship—evidenced by spiritual growth and good works—should confirm the reality of the believer's faith.
