How do we know if we are children of God?

Answered in 5 sources

Believers know they are children of God because they are led by the Spirit, crying out 'Abba, Father' (Romans 8:15).

The assurance of being God's children lies in the internal witness of the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:15 explains that believers have not received a spirit of bondage, but the Spirit of adoption, enabling them to call God 'Abba, Father.' This signifies an intimate relationship with God, and those who are in Christ and have received this spirit will inevitably know their identity as His children. Moreover, the evidence of being led by the Spirit includes a heartfelt acceptance of God's Word and the gospel, which aligns their lives with the teachings of Christ. In essence, assurance comes from the Spirit's work within the believer, affirming their status as a son or daughter of God.
