How do we know if we have received the Holy Spirit?

Answered in 3 sources

The evidence of receiving the Holy Spirit includes conviction of sin and an understanding of Christ's righteousness.

Determining whether one has received the Holy Spirit involves looking for the Spirit's transformative work in one's life. According to John 16:8, the Spirit reproves believers of sin, convincing them of their inability to please God apart from Christ's righteousness. If a believer recognizes their sinfulness and understands that righteousness comes solely through Christ, that is a sign of the Holy Spirit's presence. Furthermore, there is an assurance of judgment being lifted, as believers are taught that they are freed from condemnation through Christ’s sacrifice. This internal witness of the Holy Spirit assures the believer of their status as a son of God, leading them to repentance and faith.
