How do we know Jesus is the greater prophet than Jonah?

Answered in 1 source

Jesus is deemed greater than Jonah as He offers salvation through His own sacrifice, while Jonah was a mere messenger.

In Matthew 12:41, Jesus states, 'And behold, a greater than Jonah is here.' Jonah, known for his preaching to the Ninevites, called them to repentance, but he was still a flawed prophet who attempted to flee from God's commission. In contrast, Jesus is not only a prophet but the very embodiment of God's message and salvation. His death and resurrection serve as the 'sign' that authenticates His identity and mission, thus fulfilling the ultimate prophetic role. Whereas Jonah brought temporary repentance to a city, Christ brings eternal redemption to His people. Through His sacrifice, He addresses the deepest need of humanity: reconciliation with God, illustrating His role as the greater prophet who speaks with authority and whose actions accomplish true saving power.
