How do we know Jesus' suffering was necessary for redemption?

Answered in 1 source

Jesus' suffering and the cup He drank were necessary to bear the wrath of God for the sin of His people, ensuring their redemption.

The necessity of Jesus' suffering can be seen in His prayers at Gethsemane, where He expresses a desire for the cup to pass from Him if possible (Matthew 26:39). However, He acknowledges the necessity of drinking it to fulfill the Father's will. The cup symbolizes the unmixed wrath of God, which He bore as the substitute for His people. Hugh Martin encapsulates this by saying the cup signifies the curse of God, which He came to redeem His elect from. Thus, His suffering was necessary as it was the means by which He satisfied the demands of divine justice on behalf of sinners.
