How do we know love for Christ is central to faith?

Answered in 1 source

Love for Christ is central to Christian faith because it is through this love that we genuinely engage with Him and reflect His character to others.

Scripture repeatedly emphasizes that love is foundational in our relationship with God. In John 14:15, Jesus states, 'If you love me, you will keep my commandments.' This indicates that our obedience is an expression of our love for Him. A heart that is in love with Christ will naturally yield to His teachings and desires. The decline of our affections, as witnessed in the church at Ephesus, shows that when we neglect this love, our spiritual lives deteriorate. Love for Christ thus becomes the driving force for our actions, guiding our pursuits and shaping our character to reflect His glory.
