How do we know love for God is true?

True love for God is evidenced by obedience to His commandments and a commitment to love others as Christ loves us.

The authenticity of love for God is shown through our obedience and the manner in which we love others. In 1 John 4, it states that love for God must directly translate into love for one's neighbor. This intertwining of love demonstrates that if we love God, we will also fulfill His commandments. Therefore, our love must be a living love, evidenced by actions reflecting that commitment. When our lives exhibit a horizontal love toward others that springs from our vertical love for God, we validate the genuineness of our faith.
