How do we know love is from God?

Answered in 1 source

We know love is from God because He demonstrates love through His actions and commands us to love others.

The assurance that love is from God can be traced back to His own nature and actions. In 1 John 4:9-10, it says, 'In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.' This passage reveals that the essence of true love originates from God's sacrificial act of sending His Son for our redemption. Furthermore, as believers, our capacity to love is rooted in God's love for us; 1 John 4:7 states, 'Everyone that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.' Hence, love is a distinguishing mark of the believer that testifies to their divine heritage.
