How do we know love is real?

Answered in 1 source

Real love aligns with God's nature, is selfless, enduring, and does not rejoice in wrongdoing.

The authenticity of love can be discerned through its characteristics as outlined in 1 Corinthians 13, where Paul lists attributes such as patience, kindness, and a lack of envy. True love endures trials and seeks the best for others without asserting one's own rights selfishly. Furthermore, in 1 John 4:12, it is stated that 'if we love one another, God lives in us and His love is made complete in us.' This indicates that a genuine love for others is a manifestation of God's presence in our lives. If love is self-serving or conditional, it deviates from God's standard of love, thus failing to be the authentic love described in Scripture.
