How do we know marriage is a covenant from God?

Answered in 1 source

Marriage is a covenant instituted by God, intended to reflect His relationship with His people, which is evident throughout Scripture.

Marriage is affirmed as a covenant relationship initiated by God in Genesis 2, where He declares that a man shall leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife, becoming one flesh. This divine institution transcends culture and is significant in God's plan as it echoes the covenant relationship God has with His Church (Isaiah 54:5). Just as Christ is committed to His Church, so too are husbands called to cherish and love their wives sacrificially. The sanctity of marriage is underscored in Scripture, which indicates that violations against it are serious matters that invoke God's judgment (Hebrews 13:4).
