How do we know our desire for God is genuine?

Answered in 1 source

A genuine desire for God is characterized by sincerity, insatiability, and supremacy over all worldly desires.

To discern the authenticity of our desire for God, we can reflect on its characteristics. A true desire is sincere, longing for God for who He is rather than what He gives. It is insatiable, realizing that earthly treasures cannot fulfill the soul's deepest thirst as expressed in Isaiah 26:9, where the soul seeks God earnestly. Furthermore, a genuine desire is supreme, prioritizing God above all, including the joys of heaven, as implied in Psalm 73:25. This kind of desire is a sign of life and indicates that the kingdom of grace is active within our hearts.
