How do we know our hearts can be deceived?

Answered in 1 source

Scripture warns that the heart is deceitful and can lead us into sin without our awareness.

Jeremiah 17:9 unequivocally states, 'The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked.' This underscores the propensity of the human heart to deceive itself about its true condition and standing before God. Many live under the illusion that they are essentially good, but the reality of our unregenerate state is contrary; we are in need of a transformative work through Christ. Additionally, the heart can blind us to the dangers of sin, causing us to believe we are capable of managing our path to righteousness outside of divine grace. Without the Holy Spirit's illumination, we cannot grasp our need nor the depth of our depravity.
