How do we know prayer can be effective?

Answered in 1 source

Prayer is effective because Jesus assures us in Luke 11:9-10 that those who ask, seek, and knock will receive, find, and have doors opened to them.

The effectiveness of prayer is fundamentally grounded in the promises made by Jesus Himself. In Luke 11:9-10, Jesus encourages His disciples by stating, 'Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.' This assertion assures believers that God is attentive to their prayers and responds accordingly, promoting a relationship of trust and hope. Importantly, the assurance that these promises hold true depends on the alignment of our requests with God's will. While God may not answer in the way or time we expect, His promise stands—He will respond to genuine prayer by providing what is good for His children. This strengthens our faith and reliance on God, knowing that He desires to bless us.
