How do we know regeneration is necessary for true change?

Answered in 1 source

Regeneration is necessary because the Scriptures teach that only a new heart given by God can produce lasting change in a person's life.

The Bible teaches that natural human effort is insufficient for true godliness and holiness. As Henry Mahan explains, kindness, humility, and love are not products of the old, unregenerate heart—they are fruits of the Spirit within a newly created individual. This concept is rooted in the biblical idea that 'As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he' (Proverbs 23:7). Any lasting change requires a supernatural act of God, whereby He gives a person a new heart and spirit that desires to follow Him (Jeremiah 31:33).
