How do we know salvation is not by works?

Answered in 2 sources

Salvation is a gift from God, not based on our works, as clearly stated in Ephesians 2:8-9.

A foundational truth of sovereign grace theology is that salvation is entirely by grace through faith, as outlined in Ephesians 2:8-9: 'For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.' The parable in Matthew 25 further reinforces this by showing that the master rewards the faithfulness of the servants without implying that their works earned their salvation. The third servant's failure to act does not render him undeserving of salvation based on the works he could have performed, but rather indicates a lack of genuine faith. Thus, we recognize from Scripture that our salvation is determined by God's mercy and not by our efforts or works.
