How do we know sanctification is God's work?

Answered in 2 sources

Sanctification is God's work as He produces holiness in us through the Holy Spirit, as affirmed in Philippians 2:13.

The doctrine of sanctification emphasizes that it is ultimately the work of God in the believer’s life. Philippians 2:13 states, 'for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.' This indicates that while Christians are responsible to pursue holiness, it is God who empowers and enables this process through His Spirit. The balance lies in acknowledging that our efforts in spiritual growth and holiness are not done apart from God’s grace but are a response to it.

Further, Scripture shows us that this divine work is paired with our diligent efforts. As stated in 2 Peter 1:5-8, we are to make every effort to grow in our faith, suggesting that growth in holiness involves both divine enablement and human cooperation. Therefore, the reality of sanctification as God's work encourages continual dependence on Him while actively engaging in the means He has provided for spiritual growth.
