How do we know self-denial is essential in the Christian faith?

Answered in 1 source

Self-denial is essential in Christianity as it reflects a complete reliance on Christ's righteousness rather than our own merits.

Self-denial is a fundamental aspect of saving faith, as Paul explains in Philippians 3:7-8. It involves a conscious decision to abandon any confidence in our personal achievements or righteousness in favor of Christ's perfect righteousness. True self-denial begins when a believer recognizes their own utter inability to attain righteousness through works and instead lays hold of the righteousness that comes from God through faith in Jesus Christ. It is this act of letting go of self that signifies genuine faith, allowing believers to pursue Christ fervently and to embrace their identity as wholly reliant on His grace.
