How do we know self-righteousness is a danger for Christians?

Answered in 2 sources

Self-righteousness is a danger for Christians as it breeds pride and distorts our understanding of God's grace, leading us away from humility before Him.

Self-righteousness flourishes among religious people, as they often feel a false sense of security in their own moral accomplishments (Isaiah 65:5). This can lead to a critical spirit, where self-righteous individuals look down on others, failing to recognize their own sinfulness. Martin Luther expressed the struggle of combating this sin in one's own heart, noting that it is often most deceptive, hiding behind seemingly righteous acts and thoughts. Without confronting self-righteousness, believers risk alienating themselves from the grace of God, as they trust in their own merits rather than Christ's completed work (Philippians 3:9).
