How do we know suffering has a purpose?

Answered in 2 sources

Suffering is seen in Scripture as purposeful, often leading to spiritual purification and deeper intimacy with God.

The Bible consistently teaches that suffering is not arbitrary but has divine purpose. In Romans 5:3-5, we learn that tribulations produce perseverance, character, and hope, highlighting a chain reaction initiated through suffering. This demonstrates that affliction can lead to a closer relationship with God, as it drives us to rely on His grace.

In the sermon, it is pointed out that believers often experience their greatest nearness to God during times of suffering. The 'furnace of affliction' serves as a catalyst for spiritual growth, allowing believers to reflect on their relationship with God and encouraging them to seek His help in trials. Therefore, recognizing suffering as part of God's sovereign plan gives us the assurance that He is at work in our lives, shaping us for glory.
