How do we know that baptism is necessary for Christians?

Answered in 1 source

Baptism is a commanded ordinance for believers and reflects their faith and new life in Christ.

Though some may point to exceptions in Scripture, such as the thief on the cross who was not baptized, these cases do not negate the command for baptism. Christ's command to baptize is intertwined with the Great Commission, showing that those who believe are expected to publicly confess that belief through baptism. It is an important act of obedience that signifies a believer's identification with Christ's death and resurrection, and it is an essential step in the expression of one's faith within the community of believers.
