How do we know that believers cannot be cast away eternally?

The psalmist expresses feelings of despair and abandonment in Psalm 74, questioning why God appears to cast off His people. Salvation is seen as God's work for us, established by the covenant He made, which guarantees that His people cannot be eternally cast away.
