How do we know that Christ's suffering comforts us?

Answered in 1 source

Believers find comfort in Christ's suffering because He bore the sins and wrath of God on their behalf.

The comfort found in the sufferings of Christ is anchored in the doctrine of substitution. Paul states in 2 Corinthians 1:5 that as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds by Christ. It is His suffering for our sins that assures us of our acceptance before God. As believers, we are united with Christ in both His death and resurrection, which brings comfort knowing He has taken the wrath of God for sin upon Himself. Thus, when believers understand that their sins were laid on Christ, their sorrow over sin transforms into comfort through the assurance of salvation.
