How do we know that Christ's suffering was necessary for our redemption?

Answered in 1 source

Christ's suffering was necessary to bear the divine wrath of God against sin, as established in various biblical texts.

According to historic Reformed theology, the necessity of Christ's suffering for our redemption is rooted in the biblical doctrine of sin and its consequences. Romans 3:23 states that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, thus making all humanity deserving of God's wrath. Jesus, in His earthly ministry, understood the weight of this wrath, especially as illustrated in His prayer at Gethsemane, where He pleaded for the cup of suffering to pass from Him, yet submitted to the Father’s will. His act of drinking the cup signifies Him taking upon Himself the punishment we deserve, fulfilling God's justice while providing mercy to those He saves.
