How do we know that faith and obedience are connected?

Answered in 1 source

Faith in Christ is always accompanied by loving obedience to His will.

The relationship between faith and obedience is essential in Reformed theology. While it is clear that we are saved by grace through faith alone (Ephesians 2:8-9), this faith is never isolated from the call to obedience. The Scriptures teach that genuine faith produces good works as a natural result (James 2:17). This means that while obedience does not save us, it is the fruit that evidences our faith. A Christian who professes love for Christ but does not strive for obedience is living in contradiction to the faith they profess. Christ Himself stressed that love for Him is shown through our willingness to follow His commandments and serve others (John 14:21, John 21:17). Therefore, the presence of good works in a believer’s life is a confirmation of their faith and love for God.
