How do we know that faith is not the basis of acceptance with God?

Answered in 1 source

Faith is a gift from God, but it is never the basis for our acceptance; only perfect obedience to the law is.

While faith is essential as a response to God's call, it cannot be the basis of our acceptance with Him. This is because faith, no matter how noble, arises from within us and can inadvertently be viewed as a work that contributes to our justification. The correct understanding is that God has always required perfect obedience to His law for acceptance, as emphasized in Romans 2:13. Therefore, faith acknowledges this divine requirement and points us to Christ, who fulfills the law on our behalf.
